Staying Current in Challenging Times

From the most typical of animal ailments to the most recent challenges to their health and well-being, pet parents tend to encounter the gamut over the years they deal with puppyhood to the geriatric issues of old age. We're here when veterinary assistance isn't and may be able to assist until professional help can be sought and enlisted. Here are just a few of the more challenging issues you may encounter whilst traveling with the species of YOUR choice.

The number of Americans forfeiting their Passports — perfectly — is a wake up call for the world. People may have historically looked to the United States for guidance and leadership in times of turmoil, but today the state of the world has lead many to disavow their loyalty, in spite of the lack of another ‘clear leader’ to take its place.

This, of course, has brought about many questions pertaining to traveling with pets of every type and kind in the hope that travel issues can be simplified and even anticipated to make travel simpler and safer for all concerned.

Today, the Internet has become the ‘go to’ place for discovering options, getaways and discernment as well as the dissemination of important Information.

Keeping your pets safe in these times can often mean procuring and providing complete documentation Including the equivalent of ‘doggie passports’ to ensure that there will be no unforeseen quarantines or periods of boarding that can jeopardize the health of your pet.

Most countries have similar rules and regulations but, having stated that, there are those which seem to adhere only to their own: and this can spell trouble for you and your traveling companion.

They’re Yours: Keep It That Way

No matter the species, your pets are very likely to be your children later in life and spending time with them is crucial for the happiness of all of you. When you travel with animals, your documentation becomes your proof of ownership and making sure you have the proper health certification, vaccines [only if actually required] and any additional pertinent records becomes their passport.

Each species, of course, has their own version. Make certain to have your documentation in order before you go!

Questions? Don’t hesitate to call!

Not everyone, contrary to popular belief, is using computers. Even in this day and age when most phones are, essentially, computers, there are those among us who are not using them and, thus, the world of the Internet is still a ‘world away’ from their every day experience.

The problem for these folks is that they’re still quite limited in finding and employing options the rest of us find ‘readily available’ as we navigate the World Wide Web and employ the options we find delineated there.

With RescueRailroad.Org you don’t have to be on the web to utilize our services. Call anytime. We’re here to help 24/7.

New disease plaguing America’s pets? Who’s effected and what can you do to mitigate the risk at home?

Canine Cold? Or worse?

The headlines alone are enough to strike fear into the hearts of most pet owners: ‘Mystery Canine Respiratory Disease Outbreak Defies Scientists’ etc.

Read further, though, and you will discover the symptoms are common and may be addressed with the common sense approaches and tenacity.

Lethargy? Why it pays to be proactive

You know your pet better than anyone. When illness strikes — in any form — it’s important to provide supportive therapies until veterinary assistance can be obtained. This can include a variety of supplemental strategies that can not only contribute to shortening the period of illness or discomfort but may even provide the permanent relief every pet parent hopes to accomplish. Check out the amazing assistive therapies offered in this article!

That ‘wait and see’ approach often utilized in conventional treatments is now rarely considered to be the best option when addressing even the most common of ailments.

Instead, supporting the immune system in its efforts to mitigate the threat is proving to be the most satisfying for those pet owners who refuse to ‘stand by’ waiting to see what happens next.

When faced with symptoms — or even a battery of symptoms — when veterinary assistance is not readily available, don’t simply assume there’s nothing you can do.

Indeed, quick thinking and fast responses on the part of pet parents has very often resulted in making an untenable situation manageable, easing the symptoms and providing much needed relief for the pet and its people in record time.

Sometimes, a quick ‘pediatric’ over-the-counter preparation can bring about a resolution whilst waiting to see the veterinarian — providing for a better recuperation time once treated by the professionals in your pet’s life.

Our readers report spectacular successes with a few of the following OTC solutions:

‘Kennel Cough’ from VAITE Pet and available via Amazon for the symptoms associated with Kennel Cough including crusty noses, eye discharge, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, sneezing and even that deep, seemingly relentless cough that can accompany the battery of symptoms that we know too well.

Emetrol — A popular option for nausea and vomiting that many say gently and quickly resolves stomach upset without creating the issues some pharmaceutical preparations reportedly cause pets.

Kaopectate — Another A+ approach for chronic diarrhea that has, according to our readers, often resolved even the most stubborn cases, especially those drug-resistant versions that can follow serious illnesses such as kennel cough or canine distemper — even Parvovirus.

Diatomaceous Earth — Dealing with wounds can be among the most challenging issues pet owners face. What, after all, will work with which type of wound and are you always — despite all efforts — doomed to deal with scarring following treatment?

Spirit, a beautiful Thoroughbred, taught us an invaluable lesson following his ‘brush’ with a dangerous piece of metal after escaping his enclosure for a gallup around the nearest recycling center. The result was a nasty gash about 8 inches long and laying open a keen 3/4″.

Not that it would’ve mattered to us how beautiful on the outside he was or wasn’t — Spirit could’ve easily been a swan instead of a horse.

His height and his gorgeous build would make him a standout in any crowd.

A beautiful bay gelding, his coat is always flawless and his black mane and tail extraordinarily long and full, with his tail reaching almost to the grass. He is, by anyone’s standards, impeccable.

His personality tops off his show-stopping appearance. He gracefully and purposefully strides over to get and to give a hug any time his people appear, wrapping his long, elegant neck around them to say ‘Hello again!’ and provide a proper greeting for those he loves.

Now, he seemed to apologize for being so much trouble and even though the vet’s handling caused him apparent distress, he tolerated it as kindly as he could while the vet struggled to get enough anesthetic into the wound to deaden the pain — it was that deep.

The gigantic slash across his side completely penetrated the derma and into the meat beneath leaving the wound open to the air and ripe for infection.

The vet did what any large animal vet would do: he opened the wound further and cut away what ‘debris’ he could, suturing it shut and warning us that the edges of the skin might well die.

Mere days later, the dire event he predicted unfolded, opening the wound once more and leaving us to deal with the fallout of a fresh wound much larger than the original slash.

This time, however, the vet stated that resuturing the wound was not an option because there was simply not enough hide to open, scrub and suture again without pulling the skin to extraordinary measures and leaving an unnatural look to Spirit’s now hopelessly damaged side.

Enter Diatomaceous Earth.

Battling the flies that were constantly attracted to Spirit’s wound, we draped him with a silky layer of fabric cut to fit him better than any fly deterrent ever could. Daily, we’d dress his wound to keep the chances of infection to a bare minimum but — multiple times a day — we would cover the wound in diatomaceous earth to ensure no flies could penetrate the barriers to introduce debris or germs into his very large wound which was now much wider — the width of a grapefruit — and long.

To our utter amazement, the wound began to shrink in size and at a rapid pace no one could have foreseen.

When the vet returned to visit another equine on the property he visited Spirit and questioned us on what we had used on this large and unsightly wound. We explained that flies in the area had driven us to use diatomaceous earth to speed healing and keep any contaminants at bay.

He, too, was amazed at Spirit’s final outcome. The giant, gaping wound had been reduced to a scar the size of a thumbprint — barely larger, actually, than a thumbnail.

Another of our associates recently encountered a similar event with her Beagle mix, Remi, whose leg was hiding a massive infection that, of course, finally exploded, taking with it a lot of flesh and leaving a nasty wound that promised a similarly catastrophic scar.

Treatment at an animal hospital netted very little but an air of sympathy and Remi’s mom followed our protocol instead, thoroughly cleansing the wound and then dousing it with Betadine before finishing up with a nice layer of Diatomaceous Earth.

Although she, too, had been warned of a large and unsightly scar, Remi’s wound, too, resolved with a very small scar noticeable only to one that knew of his infection and the resulting wound he had had after it burst.

Diatomaceous earth is generally available via Amazon or almost any feed/tack store animal owners frequent. It’s ‘dirt cheap’ [pun intended] at about $10.00/bag and is also effective as flea/tick control. It’s safe to eat, is generally classified ‘food grade’ and contains no drugs, pesticides or any other potentially harmful ingredients.

4Life Transfer Factor Plus Advanced. This product has many devotees and is available primarily online and via the mail. We know it as one of the very few effective means of assisting with canine distemper as we discovered its efficacy in the middle of a crisis. Thankfully, an M.D. accustomed to working with human patients tipped us off to save the life of a precious Dalmatian who went on to live many years with absolutely no side effects from her bout with this dreaded disease. His dedication to telling us about this amazing product lead to its use with many similar situations and there’s always plenty on hand at our facilities to counter the more serious threats to the health of our fur babies.

While available at Amazon, it’s overpriced there. You can contact Rescue Railroad for additional information or to obtain it fast in the event of an emergency.

Immunocal [from Immunotec!] is another product available by mail from direct sales professionals. This powdery product is useful for a variety of situations and illnesses and, again, is available at popular outlets where it, too, is greatly overpriced. If you need prompt assistance or would like additional information, you can contact Rescue Railroad by phone or via e-mail.

Don’t let an unforeseen illness threaten the life of your pet when you can have a battery of options sitting in your medicine cabinet for ‘just such an emergency’. The rescue world is rife with emergencies but opportunities as well. Stay Prepared.

Common signs of canine respiratory illness include coughing, sneezing, labored breathing, nose or eye discharge, lethargy and decreased appetite.

National Animal Health Laboratory Network

As pet parents, we often have a lot of questions about very specific diseases and issues. Online resources and the options they outline for various conditions and challenges can vary widely — and, when working to obtain fast assistance, can prove difficult to navigate. This is where we’re different: we answer our phones and we’re careful about our recommendations. We’re not veterinarians and the information you find here is geared primarily towards the rescue community and the pets with which we work. We’re more an emergency network one can tap into when a vet isn’t readily available or you don’t have the funds to consult a professional and are looking for a quick fix until proper assistance can be located.
